National Thai Elephant Day – Maesa Elephant Camp

Maesa Elephant Camp held a big event to celebrate National Elephant Day. Even with the intense heat and traffic they had a big turn out. Everyone in attendance seemed excited for the
days festivities with both kids and adults eft in awe of each time they caught a glimpse of these majestic animals. The crowd was also treated with Traditional dancing and a beautiful live performance of traditional music to keep everyone entertained before the main event.

Of course everyone was there for one reason and one reason only, to see the Elephants be treated with a Khantoke Food feast. When the main event finally took place it did not disappoint. You could, even for a moment, do nothing but be in awe of the scene that was unfolding before you very eyes. 70 giants
trumpeting and marching down from the mountains coming to feast on the offerings presented to
them. It was really something I am happy to have witnessed and if you’re in Chiang Mai this is something you definitely missed out on.

National Thai Elephant Day helps raise awareness in hopes of funding the conservation of these majestic animals. Despite being protected by the government of Thailand, their population has been in deep decline during the last century. They’re numbers have been affected by climate change, habitat deconstruction and poaching. It is believed that around 4,000-6,000 elephants are left in Thailand, with half living in captivity.
